Two cops arrested in Kolkata for threatening, extorting money from cab driver

The Kolkata Police arrested two of its officials for allegedly threatening and extorting money from a cab driver.
According to a complaint from the car driver, the accused, identified as Koushik Ghosh and Md Montil, contacted him in August to rent his car for a visit from Kolkata to West Bengal’s East Burdwan district.
On August 29, the car driver picked the accused up from Kolkata’s Bullygunge area and they left for East Burdwan’s Shaktigarh district.
During the journey, the cab driver was asked to stop the car near Kolkata’s Writer’s building, the complaint said, adding that the accused then went for some “official work” in Writer’s building.
After coming out of the Writer’s building, they thrashed the cab driver, demanding four lakh rupees from him, the complaint said.
The accused also threatened to implicate the cab driver in a false case if he failed to provide the amount, the complaint said, adding that he then arranged two lakh rupees and gave it to the accused.
Upon receiving a complaint, the Kolkata Police arrested the two accused. On September 24, the accused, who were posted to the Detective Department of Kolkata Police, were produced before a court which granted police custody for further investigation.
